Dental Marketing in Virginia

Most of the Virginia patients we plan for live in two metros about a hundred miles apart on I-64. Greater Richmond is the state capital region, home to the state's dental school, and growing quickly in Chesterfield, Henrico and the outer counties. Hampton Roads is larger, shaped by the Navy, the shipyards and the water that splits it into the Southside and the Peninsula.

Below is how we approach search, Business Profiles, paid ads, websites and reviews for Virginia practices, with links to our Richmond and Hampton Roads programs.

The Numbers

Virginia at a Glance

1.39 million

people in the Richmond metro

Up about 6 percent since the April 2020 base, with most of the gain in the suburban counties.

1.8 million

people in Hampton Roads

The Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk metro, which also takes in three North Carolina counties.

Two Metros

Where Virginia Patients Actually Search

Greater Richmond

The capital region spreads out from the city along I-64, I-95 and Route 288, and most of its new households land in the counties:

  • Chesterfield County: about 397,000 people, up roughly 9 percent since 2020; Midlothian, Brandermill, Chester
  • Henrico County: about 343,000; Short Pump, Glen Allen, Innsbrook, Varina
  • City of Richmond: about 237,000; the Fan, Museum District, Church Hill, VCU campus
  • Hanover County: about 116,000; Mechanicsville and Ashland
  • New Kent and Goochland: the fastest-growing counties in the metro, each up close to a fifth since 2020

A practice in a newer Chesterfield or Hanover neighborhood can win families who just moved in and have no dentist yet, as long as the profile and site name the area and make the first visit easy to book.

Hampton Roads

Nine independent Virginia cities and several counties share one metro, divided by the harbor and joined by bridge-tunnels:

  • Virginia Beach: about 454,000, the largest city in the metro and roughly flat since 2020
  • Chesapeake: about 255,000; Greenbrier, Great Bridge and Western Branch
  • Norfolk: about 231,000; Ghent, Downtown and the naval station side of town
  • Suffolk: about 105,000, up roughly 11 percent since 2020 as new subdivisions push west
  • The Peninsula: Newport News, Hampton, York County, Williamsburg and James City County across the water

Across the state line, Currituck County in North Carolina is part of the same metro and grew by close to a fifth since 2020, so Southside offices near the border often draw patients from both states.

Our Approach

How We Plan a Virginia Program

  1. Step 1

Plan for two different growth stories

Greater Richmond is adding people quickly in its suburban counties, while Hampton Roads is large but close to flat overall, with growth concentrated in Suffolk, Chesapeake and the North Carolina edge. A Richmond practice usually competes for newcomers; a Hampton Roads practice usually competes for patients who are switching offices. The listing, site and ads should speak to the patient you are actually trying to win.

  2. Step 2

Respect the water in Hampton Roads

Bridges and tunnels split Hampton Roads into the Southside and the Peninsula, and a short distance on a map can be a long drive at rush hour. We set Google Ads locations and Business Profile service wording around the side of the water your office is on, then adjust once call tracking shows where booked patients come from.

  3. Step 3

    Follow the suburbs around Richmond

Patients in Midlothian, Short Pump or Mechanicsville search by those names. We build location pages and profile descriptions around the corridors near your chairs and keep them current as new neighborhoods open in Chesterfield, New Kent and Goochland.

  4. Step 4

Be clear with military and shipyard families

Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana, the shipyards in Newport News and Portsmouth, and Joint Base Langley-Eustis bring a steady flow of households that move on a schedule and choose a dentist quickly. Plain answers on accepted plans, new patient openings and family scheduling help those visitors book on the first visit to your site.

  5. Step 5

    Keep reviews coming every week

Google lists prominence, including review count and rating, among the signals behind local results. A short request after each visit and a reply process your front desk can keep up with build a steady record rather than a burst that fades.

Working Together

A Remote Team for Virginia Practices

We have no office in Virginia. Our team is based in Sacramento and San Mateo, California, and works with Virginia practices remotely through video meetings, shared dashboards and email. Our team has been building websites since 2014 and has served more than 100 practices.

Eastern Time is three hours ahead of us, so we hold strategy calls in your late morning or afternoon. Practices in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Roanoke or anywhere else outside our two metro programs get the same process, built around their own town.
